This seems to be the only place where a I can find a decent selection of curry powders/sauce. The selection at City Farmer’s Market was just sad even though they had a Malaysian and Indonesian section. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that they have a decent selection of Malay products since Penang restaurant is right next door.
Although this is a Vietnamese Market, they do carry products from other Asian countries. It seems like they’ve been cranking up their seasoning and tea selection in recent years. The even added new shelves just to accommodate more seasonings.
Since it’s a small store, they organize by food category rather than country. (I.g. All the tea is in the same aisle)
Tea selection: Vietnamese, Japanese, Chinese, British
Curry Powder: Indonesian, Malaysian, Indian
This store used to have double its inventory many years ago. With all the competition out there, it has now begun to decline. Less take out meals to choose from, broken down and empty refrigerated areas. Today as I went in, there literally was no customers. I was the only one. Two employees working up front. I then realized the entire Frozen area in the back where the seafood is was broken down. No Seafood in the aquariums, except for two tilapia fish. And one was floating upside down. So sad.. Black mold on the ceiling from leaking pipes. I remember this place when it was in its prime.
If I had about 15 to 30 minutes of your time I'd start telling you about my childhood going with my mom and my Pops to this supermarket. And that's just when I was about like eight or nine, putting this about over 20 years ago I'm guessing. Don't quote me on that I was a kid I don't remember man.
But man I have mad love for this supermarket, it's more than a grocery store will you pick up stuff for Sunday night dinner. I swear you had all these Savory and sweet goodies that you be like asking mom to Dad to get you some, because you have been good in school or you did the chores at home.
I mean at this point I must have about 10 to 15 minutes of your time right?
If not, Tldr: they got your crunchy roast pork, they got your Chinese BBQ pork, they got your crispy roasted duck, they got your soy sauce chicken, and they got your fresh sugar cane drink. That's just to start with, take some time walk around get what you need to have a little Asian grocery shopping spree.
My little picture right there, all that stuff was freshly made you could see the steam caressingly syran Wrap. Warm to the touch, tantalizing to the nose, and a sight for these Hungry Eyes
Most of these products are great, the only issue is that many of these products are expired. We bought a package of instant ramen just to find out it was more than a year past its due date. Half of the packs had already been consumed before we realized they were all expired. We had also bought a bag of rice that was 5 months past its due date. The HORRIBLE smell inside the store is another problem. As soon as you walk in, all you smell is expired meat. Not just the meat area, but the WHOLE store. Many of these employees have horrible attitude. The store need better management, new administration, and most importantly new owners.
Very happy to find vegan shrimp and vegan drummettes! Great prices, too! 7oz vegan shrimp for $4.99 and 7oz vegan wings for $4.19.
Easy location to get to. Has lots of Asian products. You can get vegan and vegetarian products here. Not a huge selection but definitely a good amount.
I wouldn't shop here for the fresh produce though. Usually you can been in and out the store fairly quickly.
I usually pick up a few things when I'm in the area getting food from Harmony Vegetarian Restaurant.
Their signs say, "Why pay more?" I can tell you: this shop has lots of items that are expired!! We picked up a few packages that were at least 6 months past the date so did not buy them, and got one or two things with no date ... and we regret it. So you might pay a little more elsewhere but you will be better off anyway.
There was a time decade's ago when most Asian markets were like this. And by this I mean , dirty, poorly lit, unorganized, smelly, and cramped. Luckily. 99 ranch, Buford highway farmers market , and the city farmers market chain came along and showed us an American version of an asian market. With clean well lit isles, and large selections of produce and goods .
Unless you're just curious about how far we've come, you can skip this place.
